Saved the Pembrokeshire #53Pigsadmin
After successfully reversing a destruction order on the famous Pembrokeshire 53 Pigs, Beneath the Wood Sanctuary took delivery of all 53 Pigs in early October 2019. Here is VeeVee, one of the 53.
We are delighted to announce that we have been successful in saving #53 pigs from slaughter and look forward to welcoming them at Beneath the Wood Sanctuary. Whilst the appeal period is still open to the defendant, no representations were made at the hearing to reclaim the pigs.
At the start of the year the pigs were rescued from Bramble Hall Farm in Wales after an investigation into an illegal ‘smokies’ slaughterhouse being operated on the premise. Smokies are a delicacy in West Africa, but have been outlawed by the European Union in 1987, due to public health concerns. Serious welfare concerns were also reported at the farm.
Upon being rescued, Pembrokeshire County Council obtained a destruction order for the 53 pigs rescued under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, due to the risk that they may have consumed dead animals on the farm and therefore possibly contracted Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE), a disease similar to the that prevalent in the 80s and 90s in cows (BSE).
Unprepared to give up on the pigs we instructed legal experts Advocates for Animals, the UK’s first animal protection law firm, who initially challenged the Council for using the Animal Welfare Act to destroy the pigs for non-welfare related reasons. Advocates for Animals along with public support have enabled us to secure this wonderful victory for the pigs.
We would like to thank Pembrokeshire County Council and APHA (an agency under DEFRA) for making the compassionate decision to have the pigs released to us so they can live out the rest of their lives in a loving environment.
As I am sure you can imagine keeping this number of pigs is not going to be cheap, we welcome any donations you are kindly able to offer, to find out more please see: https://donorbox.org/53pigs-set-up-and-care-fundraiser
